1. Which was the first record you bought with your own money?

I’m at a loss. It was probably a Beatles album, or it may have been Kiss’ Rock and Roll Over. I still listen to the Beatles, but only listen to Kiss if I’m drunk at a party and can’t find a ride home.

2. Which was the last record you bought with your own money?
It was by that band the National. It wasn’t a record though, it was an iTtunes purchase and I still haven’t listened to it.

3. What was the first solo you learned from a record — and can you still play it?
Probably the solo on the Beatles’ “I’ve Just Seen a Face." And yes, I can still play it.

4. Which recording of your own (or as a sideman) are you most proud of, and why?
I still like the solo on “The Way,” mainly because it was a goof—one take—and it made the record.

5. What's the difference between playing live and playing in a studio?
When you play live you only have one chance to get it right. In the studio you can fuss over things—sometimes way too long.

6. What's the difference between a good gig and a bad gig?
Hmmm. A good gig is where both the performer and audience have a great time and transcend space and time together. A bad gig is where you find yourself thinking about what you’re going to eat once the show is over.

7. What's the difference between a good guitar and a bad guitar?
A good guitar stays in tune and feels like an old friend when you pick it up. It also handles like a Ferrari on some windy road in Italy.

8. You play electric and acoustic. Do you approach the two differently?
The acoustic takes up more space sonically. It’s good if you’ve got to do a show all by yourself because the acoustic will fill in the blanks. An electric guitar is better for playing in a band and getting yourself heard over the drummer.

9. Do you sound more like yourself on acoustic or electric?
I always sound like myself.

10. Do you sound like yourself on other people's guitars?
See above.

11. Which living artist (music, or other arts) would you like to collaborate with?
Besides Adam Levy? How about Paulo Conti?

12. What dead artist (music, or other arts) would you like to have collaborated with?
Salvador Dali.

13. What's your latest project about?
Giving up the things that you cling to that no longer apply or are of any benefit to you in your life.
